This is Part 1 of our 3-part series for founders, CEOs, and leaders who want more than visibility. You want visibility with impact. Presence with purpose. And strategy that doesn’t water you down.
If you’re trying to grow your business or brand, you already know visibility matters. But here’s the truth most folks won’t tell you: Not all visibility is created equal. Especially for Black women entrepreneurs and multicultural brands. Not only do we have to show up, it must be with intention.
LinkedIn may feel a little snooty, but when used strategically, it can be your brand’s strongest amplifier. You can discover real connections, aligned opportunities, and long-term growth.
In Part 1, we’re breaking down how to build a magnetic LinkedIn profile that tells your story, showcases your value, and positions you for the partnerships, clients, and community you actually want.
Let’s get into it.
Start With Your Profile
Create a Headline That Hits
Your headline is prime real estate. It’s the first thing people see under your name and it’s searchable. That means if someone’s looking for a brand strategist, nonprofit consultant, or IP Attorney, your headline is how they find (and remember) you.
Instead of just listing your title (“Founder” or “Coach”), tell us what you actually do and who you do it for. This is your elevator pitch in one sentence. It should combine clarity, confidence, and a little culture.
Let Us Put You On: You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Use a formula, then add your flavor.
Formula 1: [Transformation] + [Audience] + [Role or Expertise]
“Helping Black women-owned brands scale with strategy, storytelling, and soul | Brand Consultant”
Formula 2: [Benefit Statement] + “|” + [Title or Identity Marker]
“Turning mission-driven ideas into 6-figure brands | Creative Director & Strategist”
Formula 3: [What you’re known for] + [Callout of niche or identity] + [What you lead or build]
“Storytelling That Centers Black Joy & Justice | Nonprofit Marketing Leader | Founder, The Impact Edit”
Formula 4: “I help [who] do [what] through [how]”
“I help purpose-driven orgs grow their impact through brand messaging + inclusive design”
Tips to Make It Strong
- Be specific. “Coach” is vague. “Leadership coach for first-gen Black women in tech” hits different.
- Add cultural or mission-driven language. Words like justice, liberation, joy, equity, purpose, or community speak volumes.
- Show your difference. What makes your process or perspective unique?
- Speak to outcomes. You’re not just a marketing consultant. You build brands that convert, educate, and inspire.
- Use symbols or formatting to break it up. The vertical bar “|” works great. Keep emojis minimal (if at all).
Get creative and create a headline that has flavor and function.
About Section = Your Brand’s Origin Story
Your About section is more than where you list your degrees, certifications, or client count. This section is where people feel you. Focus on letting people in on the why behind your work. Hell them see the bigger picture. Think of it like the first 30 seconds of a TED Talk. The ones that grab your attention and make you lean in because the speaker isn’t just “qualified”.
This is where you dig deeper:
- Who are you?
- Why do you do this work?
- Who do you do it for?
- What beliefs drive your brand?
- What transformation do you deliver?
Your summary should read like a beautifully honest, slightly polished version of what you’d say if someone asked you at brunch, “So tell me what you really do.”
Identity Anchors Matter
Especially as Black women, queer creators, or founders of color, your lived experience is part of your credibility. Don’t hide it. Harness it.
Example (Mental Health Consultant):
“Born from a need to make healing accessible to Black and Brown communities, we build wellness-forward cultures inside mission-led organizations. As a first-gen daughter of Caribbean immigrants and a licensed trauma therapist, I saw the gaps firsthand—burned-out teams, outdated systems, and wellness plans that weren’t built for us. Today, I partner with orgs ready to do better by their people.”
Swipe These About Section Prompts
You don’t have to write it all at once. Try answering these prompts and stitching them together:
- My work is rooted in…
→ My work is rooted in a deep belief that strategy should be human and that Black women shouldn’t have to choose between impact and income. - I started this business because…
→ I started this studio because I was tired of seeing brilliant mission-driven brands fall flat due to confusing messaging and misaligned design. - Clients come to me when…
→ Clients come to me when they’ve outgrown their DIY brand and need a partner who can match their vision with clarity and bold creative direction. - The communities I serve are…
→ The communities I serve are primarily Black women-led service businesses and nonprofits committed to social justice, health equity, and storytelling that heals. - At the heart of everything I do is…
→ At the heart of everything I do is liberation because a well-told story can change minds, open wallets, and shift power.
Tips to Make It Pop
- Start with a hook: A belief, origin moment, or vivid cultural truth.
- Let your voice shine: Write it how you’d say it. Professional doesn’t mean robotic.
- Sprinkle your receipts: Drop 1–2 proof points (years in business, impact metrics, media features), but don’t make it a résumé.
- Close with a vision: What are you building? What kind of clients do you want to attract?
Build a Network That Aligns With Your Vision (Not Just Your Industry)
Listen, this is not a numbers game. Having 5,000 connections that don’t vibe with your values or goals? Useless. LinkedIn is about building a strategic circle of people who see you, support you, and might one day hire or refer you.
Connect With Intention
Look for potential clients, partners, collaborators, and community builders. If you’re a Black-owned business in tech, that might mean connecting with DEI leads at software firms, Black venture capitalists, or heads of innovation at social enterprises.
Chromie tip: Always send a short note when connecting. A little context goes a long way.
Engage Like a Real Human
(Show Up and Show Out)
If you’re only showing up on LinkedIn when you’re launching something or asking for support, your engagement will feel transactional instead of transformational. Building trust takes consistency, and consistency doesn’t mean constant posting; it means presence.
So what does engaging like a real human actually look like?
- Celebrate your people. Comment on the wins. Repost the job updates. Shout out a client’s new launch. Black women in business often move in silence—be the one who claps out loud.
- Offer real insight. Don’t just hit “like.” Add your take. Drop a helpful link. Ask a follow-up question. That’s how you stay top of mind without being salesy.
- Lift others as you climb. Share opportunities, tag collaborators, or use your post to spotlight another voice in your community. If your name is getting visibility, bring someone else with you.
- Respond to your DMs with intention. If someone reaches out after a post or comment, treat it like the beginning of a relationship, not an interruption. A thoughtful response can turn into a real lead or even a referral.
- Be visible when it’s quiet. Engagement isn’t just for viral moments. If you want to stay relevant, show up when things are slow. That’s when relationships deepen.
And above all, remember this: you don’t have to code-switch or perform to be professional. LinkedIn isn’t just for suit-and-tie energy anymore. Show up with warmth, wit, clarity, culture, whatever feels authentic to you. Let people see the human behind your brand.
Your energy is special. Make it memorable.
We think we’ve given you enough to chew on. In Part 2, we’ll unpack content strategy. You will learn how to show up consistently, share what you know, and build trust with your audience through posts that spark engagement without overwhelming you.
Then in Part 3, we’ll go deeper on lead generation, DM etiquette, and how to use LinkedIn to move people from your comments to your contracts.
